I bought the Lenovo Yoga 900 in march 2016 for about a 1200 dollars on amazon, although right now you can get it cheaper. I’ll be honest; when buying any new device on the internet I’m always rather cautious. Because you can do all the research you want on processors, battery life, screen-resolution, speed, etc. , but only when you’re actually using the device can you be sure whether you made the right decision. And sometimes the device is running perfectly, but for some reason it just doesn’t feel like the right fit to me. I’ve been using the Lenovo Yoga 900 for a couple of months now and I know I should keep my conclusion for the end, but I’ll tell you right now: I love it! Below I will be giving you more details of course and I will really be focusing on the usability of the product rather than the raw numbers. If you’re a real computer-geek however, don’t worry, here is a link to the specifications. And below you’ll see the link to the official Lenovo website.
Battery life and charging
Now to start of: one of the most important issues for laptops is battery life and charging. The battery lasts between 7 and 9 hours, depending on your settings and what you’re running. When running heavy programs, of course your battery will last for a smaller amount of time. In my experience this is plenty, I honestly never ran out of battery when I took the time to properly charge the device. As for charging time. When charging the laptop from completely dead to a full 100% it took a little over 2 hours. Although there are laptops out there who perform better on both, unless this is really important to you, I don’t think it will make a notable difference. Both charging and battery life are sufficient enough for most professional users and in my opinion it would be foolish to spend money to increase either.
Performance and Design
I could probably write a couple of pages on both these topics; but let’s face it, you’ve got things to do. So instead of overloading you with numbers, I’ll keep things simple. The fact is that unless you are running extraordinary heavy software ( in which case I advise looking into desktops ), you’re good. I personally like to game quite a bit, and I have yet to find a game the Yoga 900 could’t handle. The performance is smooth and perfectly able to run multiple programs at the same time. I can honestly say you couldn’t go wrong here with buying the Yoga 900. Just make sure that you give it proper maintenance, like you should with every computer to keep it at its best performance. You have the ability to choose between 4, 8 or 16 GB RAM. For most usage the 8GB should be more than sufficient, if you’re looking for a little extra however you can always opt for the 16GB. When it comes to the display (3,200 X 1,800 pixels) I have got to say that it looks stunning and to be honest I think spending more for even better resolution is just throwing your money away.
Now this part is my favorite: the design. This is one of my all-time favorite designs. It not only looks amazing, but also has a couple of perks I personally think more laptops should be equipped with. Overall the Yoga 900 has a very premium look, with its silver metal shell it’s a little bit similar to the MacBook Pro, though perhaps a little more sturdy. Once you open the laptop however the design is quite different. And for those who don’t like the silver look, there a couple of other colors you can choose from. It’s the two following perks however that really sold me on this notebook:
- First and foremost: the Lenovo Yoga 900 is equipped with a special mechanism which allows you to turn the screen 360 degrees. So you can essentially turn you laptop into a tablet and everything in between. It functions perfectly as both, as the keyboard and trackpad are automatically disabled when it’s turned into tablet-mode and you can manoeuvre around through touchscreen. To me this has been proven enormously useful as you essentially have the advantages of both devices combined, with even a number of extra settings. I actually don’t use a tablet anymore after buying this laptop. So if you think it’s a bit pricey; this can easily save you a couple hundred dollars!
- The keyboard deck is covered with a smooth leather, which not only make it look amazing but feels fantastic as well. I’ve noticed that, in contrast to laptops which have no covering, it stays warm and doesn’t stick to your hands when you’ve been typing for while; which makes it a lot more comfortable.
Strength and Durability
When it comes to durability there is very little I can say. So far I have never needed to send it back for repairs, but so far I never dropped it either and frankly, I don’t want to test it out. What I can say though, is that the due to hinge which allows the screen to turn 360 degrees, you don’t have to worry about the screen breaking of. Due to this I would say that, in its design the Yoga 900 outperforms most of its competitors when it comes to durability. Again however, as I’m always very careful with my computers, I can’t say with full certainty how the Yoga 900 compares.
Where to begin? Everything I’ve said so far pretty much shows how I feel about the Yoga 900. But if I had to pick, it would be the turning mechanism for the screen. You have a lot of laptops out there with similar performance to the Yoga 900, but very few notebooks have this kind of design. Which makes this one quite unique. Of course I don’t want to give the impression that’s the only thing where the Yoga 900 stands out. In general the Yoga 900 simply gives you your money’ s worth, in all areas.
Traditionally, in a review, you leave a part for the worst features. But here I was really struggling to find some. Because in my experience with this laptop, I’ve never been disappointed. Sure, you could find other laptops out there with better performance, battery life or display, but most of them also have a higher price-tag to come with it. So normally I would dedicate a portion of the review to disadvantages, but in the case of the Yoga 900, they were so minor I find it a waste of time to mention them here as most users will never even notice them
As my overall conclusion I have to say that the Lenovo Yoga 900 is one my favorite computers out there. It does incredibly well on performance and display. But for me it’s mainly the design and its usability that make it stand out from its competition. The price might be an issue for some people, but I think when you actually add up the different perks, it really is worth the investment. As I mentioned earlier, the design allows the notebook to be used as both a laptop and a tablet, which in itself saves you quite a bit of money. Secondly because of its outstanding performance, you can keep using it for quite a long time before it becomes outdated. Everyone needs to find the right device for themselves of course, but if your looking for a high quality, durable laptop, you just cannot go wrong with Lenovo Yoga 900.
Overall Rating : 9.5/10
