As a tech entrepreneur, I love gadgets which can increase my productivity. I write about personal & business growth and gadgets which could add ease in my growth journey. After constantly searching for a laptop which could make sense for personal and business use alike, I found- Microsoft Surface Pro 6, the new generation all-in-one high performance machine. Though the base model (8 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD) is priced at $999, you can buy it at $750 at amazon.

Design and Performance

The Surface pro comes with the Microsoft’s now-iconic aesthetic casing- the signature uni-body magnesium design with hidden perimeter venting which  looks at par with the classic Apple Macbook Air design. Of the two color choices-Platinum and Black, platinum stands out with the stylish metallic design. The matte black will look great in hands of a professional though.
Microsoft has a great PC applications suite and this laptop comes loaded with Microsoft teams, one note, one drive and outlook.

With the familiarity of windows combined with high performance with the latest quad-core powered 8th Gen Intel® Core™ processor which makes it a whopping 67% faster than its predecessor Surface Pro 5th gen. It received a U-series 8th Gen processor from Intel which makes it faster from it’s 8th Gen Intel processor-powered counterpart notebooks as most are Y-series . For a laptop so powerful it’s ultra light weight at just 1.7 lb (770 gm).

The Best Tablet with keyboard

The USP of the Surface Pro 6 is that it’s 2-in-1 hybrid laptop-tablet, that adapts to you.  It is a portable touchscreen full work laptop with the Signature Type Cover and a laptop-class detachable keyboard in stunning colors that transforms into a tablet with the creative versatility of touch and Pen. With Microsoft surface pro 6, I have the ability to choose how I interact with it- type, touch, or Surface Pen. Though it’s a shame that you have to shell out an extra $200 for the Signature Type cover, but it’s an essential if you want to use the Surface Pro as a laptop or a tablet with keyboard.

I even use it as my portable studio by lowering the Kickstand for a natural writing and drawing angle with Surface Pen (which is again an essential to be bought separately for $35) and Surface Dial. This really gives the Surface Pro 6 a ton of diversity and utility. With the Surface Pen, I can annotate any PDF and work on it as a business draft. The Drawboard PDF unlocks productivity by saving my time by naturally marking up PDFs with the ease of pen and paper.

The Screen has a 12.3″ 10 point multi-touch PixelSense™ Display and comes with a Intel® UHD Graphics 620. The Surface Pro 6 has a display that’s incredibly sharp at 2,736 x 1,824 (267 PPI) [apple macbook air is 227 PPI] and with a productivity-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio. Microsoft’s latest Pixel Sense technology creates as thin a panel as possible, creating images that really pop and making pen and fingertip presses as natural as possible.

In fact it’s a 3-in-1 and can convert into a desktop PC using the Surface Dock which is sold separately. I can add up to two external 4k monitors and add USB-C™ connectivity with the Surface connect (to be bought separately) to USB-C Adapter.

Tech Specs of Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Storage and Memory

The Surface Pro comes with many variants as far as storage and memory are concerned. In my view, one can chose the 8 GB memory with 128 GB or 256 GB SSD storage and the 16 GB RAM option with 512 GB or 1 TB SSD storage options. The 256 GB with 8 GB RAM which i use, is a fan-less i5 and hence a quiet and fast quad-core work-space which i love. I can smoothly work with dozens of tabs opened along with multiple documents, juggling through multiple slack conversations, while listening music on Spotify and playing occasional videos or photo editing. Though stuff like video editing makes it pretty warm. With the UHD 620 Graphics Processing Unit, it’s not great for moderately-heavy gaming.

In my view, it is one of the most powerful work laptops in this range with a decent entertainment and utility value of a tablet combined, but not heavy graphic entertainment like gaming or video editing.

Battery life

Microsoft claims up to 13.5 hours of local video playback battery life, while in my view it lasts 9.5 hours of web browsing which is a decent battery life compared to Apple’s Macbook Air. It’s great that you don’t need to pull out your bulky power adapter before completing your entire work day.

Connections

It has all these ports for useful connections

  • full-size USB 3.0
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Mini Display Port
  • Surface Connect port
  • Surface Type Cover port
  • Micro SDXC card reader
  • Compatible with Surface Dial

After recently introducing Surface Connect port which works well with the Surface dock (sold separately for $80), the only problem with Microsoft Surface Pro 6 which was the absence of USB-C connectivity, has been solved. This basically has the power to boost your productivity and turn your Surface Pro 6 into a Desktop PC. Now you’re able to connect USB drives, portable battery banks to charge it without carrying the bulky AC adapter , Ethernet cable, HDMI video cables and audio output cable. This is essentially all the connections you need which makes the Surface Dock and Surface connect port cable must-haves.

Video and Audio

It sports a 5.0 MP front-facing camera with 1080p Skype HD video and a 8.0 MP rear-facing autofocus camera with 1080p Full HD video
It comes with dual microphones and 1.6W stereo speakers with Dolby® Audio™ Premium sound.

Windows Hello Bio-metric Authentication

As a tech entrepreneur, I feel business secured through the Windows Hello biometric authentication which provides enterprise-grade security. You can protect your data and allow IT to control user access with BitLocker and Surface TPM chips.

For business and education customers it comes pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro and Microsoft Office 365 ready., with an option of upgrading the 1 year free warranty to Microsoft complete for business service package which covers two accidental damage events per year.

It might face competitions not just from outside but from home as well, through the tablet-PC Microsoft Surface Go. The Surface Go gives the Surface experience in a smaller package at a much cheaper rate though the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is a much powerful and faster computer. In the same range of 2-in-1 detachable tablet with keyboard category, Microsoft Surface has many competitors but it stands out as a powerful work laptop with an amazing display and connectivity and seamless experience with foundations and familiarity of Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 365.

I will give the Microsoft Surface Pro a 9.0/10.
