The Sony Xperia M4 aqua E2306 is a mid-range phone I bought around March 2016, through Amazon. Despite it was running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop), it gave me unpleasant experiences. It was only after a few months of use when it was updated to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). After the update, I can only recall enjoyable moments using my Xperia M4 Aqua. Even though most of the poor experiences I’ve had with it have been because of the features Sony opted to add, it does not justify the fact that they did not try to fix it sooner rather than later.
I bought this phone because I was exhausted from having to use my old cell phone, and I was not disappointed. It cost me around $250-300 dollars at that time and since most of the features were remarkably appealing I did not hesitate to buy it. I got used to it and was loving the experience of having such a cheap and reliable phone, but it did not show its true colors until a few months of use.
Battery Life & Charging
The Sony Xperia M4 aqua is packed with a 2450 mAh (non-removable) battery. This is something you should be careful with. Since it is a nonremovable battery, if you were to have problems with the cell phone and decided to open it up, it is highly difficult and you will require a professional work. Sony is always willing to get your cell phone fixed and do it for you, but the goal is to be able to fix a simple malfunction by yourself instead of having to wait a few weeks for its repair.
Its battery life performance tends to wear out after a few months of use. You can get a good 5-6 hours of moderate use (watching videos, listening to music, using apps such as Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, or Whatsapp). Since I am always texting via apps and watching videos, my battery life tends to wear out rather quickly. When I am working, I do not use my phone all the time, so it can last about 15 hours if you use it only to get push notifications, texts and such. Its charging time using Sony’s charger is the highlight of this device. It can fully charge your phone in about 40-50 minutes. Keep in mind this tends to vary since many people use their own micro USB cables.
Performance & Design
It barely weighs about 136 grams and with a 7.3mm thickness, it makes it comfortable to have it in your pocket. With its 2GB RAM, you can’t ask for much, but it does accomplish its job when thrown a bunch of applications at the same time and performs well. The version I got was the 8GB of internal storage running Android 5.0 (Lollipop). The system took about 3 to 4GB of space, and it only left the consumer around 2.5 to 3GB of free space. Thanks to this, the consumer was left with performance issues and “crashing” of the system was ensured. My phone rebooted at random times, or it would shut down for no reason. One specific characteristic of the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is that it heats up rapidly. This is because of the waterproof feature since its components are tightly packaged. A common fix is to shut it down a little bit, or if it is heating up frequently I would advise returning the unit for another one.
Strength & Durability
Besides having minimal issues with the phone, the MicroSD card slot started to malfunction. I decided to send my phone back to Sony (every cell phone has a 1-year warranty) and received my unit within the two weeks. My phone’s motherboard was changed and now had 16GB of internal capacity along with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). This change made the differences between the 8GB and 16GB version stand out. My phone was running smoothly with no problems, no random shutdowns or reboots, a lot of free space for pictures, videos, and backup data.
The durability of the Xperia M4 Aqua is amazing. The corners are made of nylon, so it will protect your phone from falls. I have dropped this cell phone countless times and it would only leave minimal or no marks at all. I would not recommend being sloppy as I am since many users tend to think it’s indestructible and drop it every now and then to test it.
- Waterproof: You can take this phone with you while showering. Dropping fluids on it, taking it on rainy days, or submerge it in a pool to take a picture should be the least of your worries because it does what Sony promotes.
- It has great durability and overall flexibility.
- It is lighter than any smartphone I have owned in the past few years.
- This is an affordable smartphone with outstanding features for its list price.
- Its 8GB model should not be in the market. Less than 4GB of free space, and causes frequent app shutdowns as well.
- Its 13 MP camera is something that I wish they could fix earlier. It was troublesome to take pictures with it since random results would occur when trying to take one.

I can’t say I fell in love with the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, but I got to admit that its features such as waterproof and cheap price are beyond appealing to a regular consumer. It has been a delight to carry it with me in my pocket with no issues since it is extremely light. Its design is amicable, so using it for quite a while would not cramp my hands. It has positively affected my life since I do not worry about it too much, but because of the frequent problems I had with it, I wish I could have gotten a better unit from Sony than what I paid for. The Xperia usually does not let their users down, but in this case, the Xperia M4 Aqua truly shines in both good and bad ways.
